The above link directs to a BAFTA winning short film titled About a Girl (2001) directed by Brian Percival. I find this film both visually and thematically interesting. Visually, the film uses many jump cuts during scenes where the protagonist speaks directly to the camera while walking along a canal, creating a very jarring viewing experience. These scenes are intercut with shots of other moments of the protagonist’s life. The seemingly slow pacing builds suspense, ultimately leading the audience to a shocking conclusion about this teenage girl. Thematically, the film addresses many issues not typically discussed in mainstream media such as domestic violence and teenage pregnancy.
